Transporters
Bicycles were introduced to Vietnam in the late 19th century by the French. Although most bicycles have now been overtaken by motorbikes, they remain a part of Vietnamese daily life.
I vividly remember walking the streets of Saigon for the first time. I needed a moment to process the sounds, the smells—but mostly, what I was witnessing: a chaos that was somehow under control.
I wondered how traffic could possibly flow when the "rules" seemed to be something people had learned as children—rules now imprinted in their very souls.
This is how most people travel from point A to point B in Vietnam. They transport food, goods, pets, and family members. The Vietnamese navigate cities and villages on motorbikes like no one else.
"Transporters" is a series dedicated to the amazing people of Vietnam.
