Vastelaovend

Vastelaovend is the way people from Limburg refer to Carnival. In the south of the Netherlands, unlike the rest of the country, some provinces share traditions linked to Catholicism—like Carnaval.

I went to Maastricht to experience one of the three days when the city transforms into a grand theatrical celebration, full of elaborate outfits, painted faces, brass bands, and plenty of drinks— believe me, drinking lots of beer is part of the game.

People gathered in Vrijthof to celebrate, sing, and dance. Some were waiting for the parade to pass by, while others were simply enjoying the celebration with friends. It felt like one big family.

I was amazed to see how this tradition has been carried on for generations and how important it is to the people of Maastricht. From young children to oma’s and opa’s, everyone made an effort to wear masks, role-play, and have a lot of fun.

Vastelaovend is rich, absurd, creative, and joyfully mad.

I hope this is the first of many series dedicated to Carnival celebrations around the world. Next time I return to Maastricht, maybe I’ll come back as a jester with a camera.
